Master Lin is well known throughout the entire Anxi Mountain region for his skill at charcoal roasting oolong. It is an essential step in the traditional crafting of any oolong from Fujian. The rewards are high: when done well, the process of charcoal roasting coaxes sweetness, fragrance and great complexity from the tea leaves. A craftsman will perform several rounds of this slow roasting before the tea is finished. This process becomes like a signature made on the oolong: every craftsman has a different roasting process, or a different touch, that they take pride in having developed themselves through a great deal of practice and consideration of the effect the roasting has on the tea in the glass.

This Charcoal Roasted Oolong is a blend of 3 different oolong varietals: Golden Cassia, Tieguanyin, and Gold Guanyin, all that grow in Master Lin’s tea garden in Meizhuang Village, Anxi. Even when mixed with milk it appears exceptionally rich. Its taste is even softer and smoother than we would expect: it has a totally edgeless mouthfeel and a sweet, woody finish that lingers long after we’ve swallowed. This varietal is indigenous to the area, favouring the cool climate of the mountains where the tea trees are covered in cloud and mist all year round. These conditions bring out the full character of this varietal, producing a tea that is vibrant, full bodied and sweet.

Unlike many “milk oolongs” available on the market, this is real Jin Xuan, meaning that it does not have anything artificial added to make it taste more creamy. On top of that, this is the best Jin Xuan we have ever tasted!

As promised, this tea drinks like steamed milk – It has a buttery and full mouthfeel that tastes like vanilla cookies and sweet cream. The combination of its slight dustiness and palate-coating density is so enjoyable, it is a tea that keeps you wanting more of it. Its clean, floral finish reminds us of freshly washed cotton.

We can’t think of a tea that references more sweet and comforting things. This oolong will last through many infusions, becoming more and more impressively and pleasingly milky.

. . .

Brewing guide

Tea

4g

Temperature

100 °C

Water

120ml

Steep time

1-3 min

No. of infusions

6
