Happy New Year! Cultivate is focusing on education this year. In the spirit of that, we would like to offer a paid tea apprenticeship to someone who is interested in learning more about Chinese tea. 


What you will learn in the apprenticeship:

  • Tea Knowledge

    • Types of Chinese tea, traditional craftsmanship of tea and how this tradition is carried forward, the relationship between tea and where it is grown, the importance of terroir in Chinese tea in both the natural and social context, the major regions of tea, traditional and contemporary farming practices of Chinese tea

  • History of Tea

    • History of the different types of tea, the history and stories of the many well-known Chinese teas, history of pu’erh tea, history of white tea, history of the four types of oolong tea

  • Tea Brewing (hands-on)

    • The brewing method of different types of Chinese teas, the traditional Chinese tea ceremony and gongfucha brewing method

  • Tea Tasting (hands-on)

    • How to taste teas properly through comparison tasting, vertical and horizontal tastings

 

Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Packing tea

  • Greeting customers in the store and providing assistance

  • Sharing knowledge with customers and helping them with tea selection

  • Assisting with tea brewing

  • Assisting with private tea tastings at the bar

  • Tidying and cleaning of the store

 

Hours / Commitment:

  • Approximately 20 hours per week, must be available Friday through Sunday

  • Minimum one year apprenticeship, opportunity to transition into paid position afterwards

  • Starting in March or April 2022

 

We are looking for someone who is curious, open-minded, and loves to learn. Previous tea experience is an asset but not required.
