Nokime Tenmoku Chawan

This chawan crafted by Hidekazu Nakamura is a part of a small collection of ceramics he made for our shop in November 2025, at his studio in Tsuruoka, Yamagata.

If there was a piece from the collection we’d want to keep for ourselves at the shop, this would be it. This one-of-a-kind matcha bowl has a base of Tenmoku, a famous black glaze, alchemically overlayed with an oxidized yellow pigment.

We see the Tenmoku behaving in celestial ways in this piece: like space, it suspends other light-reflecting particles, illuminating them by way of its extreme depth.
